Care should be object-specific.

Vintage dyes, fibres and prior use vary. Begin with the condition and care notes in the individual textile record; one washing instruction cannot suit every old cloth.

Before washing

Check the object record for prior washing, colourfastness notes, loose threads, repairs and fragile areas. If these details are unclear, contact us before washing.

Storage

Store clean and dry, away from prolonged direct sunlight and damp. Avoid unnecessary pressure on weak folds or repairs.

For a fragile or historically significant textile, seek advice from a textile conservator before cleaning or altering it.
