Identification notes

Owner-supplied Etsy description for listing 4606985800 identifies a complete uncut 44 × 200 cm panel. The cloth was salvaged from an old bedsheet, washed and ironed; some light yellowing and use-related ageing remain.

Construction crane trucks are interspersed with blooming peonies, blue rose-like flowers and delicate foliage against a violet-purple field. The machinery evokes industrialisation, infrastructure building and hopes for modernisation in mid-twentieth-century China.

The peony is a longstanding Chinese floral symbol associated with wealth, honour, happiness and abundance. Together with the construction cranes, the imagery can be read as a combination of aspirations for material progress and traditional good fortune.

The owner attributes the cotton to the Shanghai region and an approximate 1950s–1960s date. Precise year, factory and original printing equipment have not been independently authenticated.

The source describes traditional hand-spun cotton with a thin, soft, flexible handle and a multicolour folk-printed surface in violet, pink, coral, blue and cream.

The complete piece may be used for patchwork, quilting, textile collage, slow stitching, small sewing projects, framed art or research into industrial-era Chinese folk design.

Why this piece matters

Blossoms of Progress — industrial optimism among peonies

The combination of construction cranes and traditional florals captures an unusual visual dialogue between mid-century infrastructure development and wishes for prosperity.

The original 44 × 200 cm length has survived as a salvaged bedsheet textile; its gentle yellowing and soft aged handle remain part of the object record.

Large peonies, rose-like blue blossoms and the machinery motifs are printed onto the cloth, not woven into its structure.
