OVERVIEW / A WAY IN

Read pattern as a surface, not only an image.

Scales, ripples and curving bands invite a different way of looking. These objects are grouped from the catalogue’s figured and treadle-woven records, where pattern, colour and surface relief can be studied together.

Field notes & catalogue basis

Which part of the pattern is made by the weave itself?

Scales, ripples and curving bands invite a different way of looking. These objects are grouped from the catalogue’s figured and treadle-woven records, where pattern, colour and surface relief can be studied together.

The supplied descriptions identify figured weaving and, for Blue Dragon Lattice, treadle weaving. Study the repeated changes in yarn position. A foot-operated loom and a particular figured structure are not interchangeable labels; individual threading and treadling sequences have not yet been reconstructed here.

Working technical categories from the supplied object records. Loom-specific explanations and comparisons with plain weaving remain under review until a corresponding draft or practitioner account is available.

The observation card aims for 2× the displayed image. If the source lacks enough pixels, magnification is limited; the frame can still help isolate a detail. Enlarging does not recover missing focus or texture.
