OVERVIEW / A WAY IN

A woven ground. Another layer of colour.

Look at these textiles as two connected surfaces: the cotton ground and the printed image. Peonies, lotus ponds and garden compositions move across cloth whose own yarn and texture remain visible beneath the colour.

Field notes & catalogue basis

Where does the colour meet the thread?

Look at these textiles as two connected surfaces: the cotton ground and the printed image. Peonies, lotus ponds and garden compositions move across cloth whose own yarn and texture remain visible beneath the colour.

The supplied records describe multicolour prints on handwoven cotton grounds. Compare an edge of printed colour with the warp and weft beneath it. Slight shifts between colour areas are observations to record, not by themselves proof of a particular printing method.

Based on the supplied object descriptions and photographs. Where the tool or print method is unverified, the Atlas retains the broader term folk print rather than assigning a woodblock or other specific apparatus.

The observation card aims for 2× the displayed image. If the source lacks enough pixels, magnification is limited; the frame can still help isolate a detail. Enlarging does not recover missing focus or texture.
